The Underdog Diaries 01: DALLAS

Welcome to The Underdog Diaries – TLRD’s newest blog series.

Let’s start with a little background of why this series came about…

While we consider every rescue dog to be an underdog in some way, there are some that have to fight an extra battle or two. The seniors, the mamas, those with special needs, the bully breeds, the medical cases, and those that don’t get along with other pets. In other words, they have to fight a little harder to find their forever homes.

However, these characteristics don’t make them less deserving of a forever home. If anything, and to TLRD especially, these dogs are more badass.

Our team has always described ourselves as a group of misfits rescuing a bunch of misfits. It’s what we know and love. But, we realize not everyone sees this side and knows how special the underdogs can be.

Thus, The Underdog Diaries was born – to feature and share special stories about the dogs who had a harder time finding a forever home.

We’re kickin’ this series off with our boy DALLAS. Dallas spent over two years at the North Central Shelter in Los Angeles before TLRD broke him outta there on January 1st 2020. He’s a senior American Staffordshire Terrier who was fostered and then adopted by Sean McClain and Lauren Cetnarowski. This is their story!

When did you adopt Dallas?
March 1, 2020

What characteristics makes Dallas an underdog?
He's a senior, bully breed, and he does not get along with other pets.

Did you foster Dallas before you adopted?
Yes.

Why did you decide to keep Dallas?
He fit into our pack perfectly and we couldn't imagine our lives without him. He's the perfect big boy.

What were some of the challenges you faced when you first brought Dallas home?
TOO BIG! We'd never had a dog as big as Dallas, so it took some getting used to. We figured out how to accommodate his size pretty quickly and because we walk him often, he just sleeps all day! He also didn't have the best leash manners, but through practice and consistency he's become a true gentleman.

And what were some of the rewards once you adjusted to those challenges?
Having worked on these things for the past several months has led to a mutual respect with Dallas that I really treasure. Because we've had to work on so much together my relationship with him is the closest I've had with a dog.

What's something unique about Dallas' personality?
His expressive eyes and charming aloofness.

How does Dallas make you a better human?
He's made me more consistent and patient. He also encourages me to be more social in the workplace, aka our living room.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about going to a breeder to get a dog?
I would say if you want a companion, go to a breeder. If you want to do something truly special for another living soul and forge a bond that's so dang strong it makes your eyes watery just writing about it, then take a look at adopting.

Anything else you want to share about Dallas?
He's the perfect dog for me and my lifestyle and I never would have guessed that before meeting him.
