The Underdog Diaries 02: TURBO

If you've been following us for awhile then oh boy do you know the story of TURBO! But if you're new around here, grab a box of tissues and make sure to check out the video linked at the end.

The cliff notes of Turbo's rescue story:

In March of 2018, Turbo came to us at 4-months-old after being hit by a car. His two back legs were paralyzed and he had a big pressure sore on his bottom/hip from sitting too long and dragging his legs around. Despite his trauma and difficulty getting around, Turbo was the HAPPIEST boy. Acting no different than your average 4-month-old puppy. 

We took Turbo to one vet who said he should probably just be euthanized – the surgeries and challenges won't be worth it. His fosters, Tanya and Ted, refused to give up on Turbo and we agreed. This boy deserved a chance.

We found another vet who saw how special Turbo was and believed it was possible for him to live a happy life – it will take some time, but he will heal.

Eventually, we had to amputate both of his back legs which actually improved his life immensely. 

After 7 different fosters and 1 failed adoption, Turbo found his forever family on December 7th, 2019. The Clausi family opened their hearts to this sweet boy – they were exactly what Turbo needed.

What were some of the challenges you faced when you first brought Turbo home?

Getting his wound to heal. Getting him fitted into a different wheelchair.

*By the way, they're still dealing with getting his wound to heal today.


And what were some of the rewards once you adjusted to those challenges?

Seeing how comfortable he was on walks and how fast he can RUN! Watching him heal.

What's something unique about Turbo's personality?
He is always happy!


What's your favorite trait about Turbo?
Physical: right floppy ear.

How does Turbo match up to your lifestyle? As in, do you both like to hike? Couch potatoes? OR did you have to adjust your lifestyle once you got Turbo?
Both! He gets us out.. he KNOWS when it is time for his W.A.L.K. He also LOVES to snuggle with you on the couch or bed.. if you pick him up.

How does Turbo make you a better human?
Turbo helps all of us be in a better mood. His happiness is contagious.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about going to a breeder to get a dog?
There are so many amazing animals that are available for adoption. They are ready for a loving and forever home. Please rethink your decision. Adopt don't shop!!

Anything else you want to share about Turbo?
Turbo was meant to be in our family. His personality fits right in. I can remember when we talked with TLRD, we told them what our house looked like : busy, loud, 2 kids, 2 cats. Do you have a dog that would fit with our family? She said "yes.... but.... he only has 2 legs. Check him out on our video."
I fell in love. Met him December 7th at the adoption event with the rest of our family and it was a huge "YES!" from all of us. Man, we love this dog!

Ready for a #ThrowbackThursday?! This week on The Underdog Diaries we are featuring HANNAH and her mama, Amanda! Hannah was one of the first dogs TLRD saved back in May of 2012 . The Underdog Diaries 06: NINA

3 years and 6 months... That's how long Nina spent with TLRD looking for the right forever home. When we save dogs, we have absolutely no idea how long they're going to be with us. Some dogs stay with us for 24 hours, some stay for a year. It's an unpredictable world and some of our absolute favorite rescues have spent months and even years waiting for a family. They can be the perfect dog in our eyes, but that doesn't mean they'll find a home quickly. The average time in a foster is about 3-4 months and that's the time commitment we ask for from fosters before they take a dog. Poor Nina spent 1289 days packing her bags 14 times to go to different fosters. Nina is an adorable English Bulldog/American Staffordshire mix with a big ol' block head. Welcome to The Underdog Diaries – TLRD’s newest blog series. Let’s start with a little background of why this series came about… While we consider every rescue dog to be an underdog in some way, there are some that have to fight an extra battle or two. The seniors, the mamas, those with special needs, the bully breeds, the medical cases, and those that don’t get along with other pets. In other words, they have to fight a little harder to find their forever homes. However, these characteristics don’t make them less deserving of a forever home. If anything, and to TLRD especially, these dogs are more badass. Our team has always described ourselves as a group of misfits rescuing a bunch of misfits. It’s what we know and love. But, we realize not everyone sees this side and knows how special the underdogs can be.
